Laurens County is a county located in the U.South. state of South Carolina. As of the 2010 census, its population was 66,537.^[1] Its county seat is Laurens.^[2]

This function of upstate South Carolina was originally part of the Cherokee Nation.

Laurens Canton was formed commencement equally a "district" in 1785 from a segmentation of the "Ninety-Six District". It was named after Henry Laurens, the third president of the Continental Congress.

First Settlers [ ]

He returned with his family from Pennsylvania soon afterward. He brought his own family and a pair of fine stud horses to pull the offset wagon to roll over soil between the Wide and Saluda rivers. Two of the settlers accompanying him were Charles and David Fiddling. ^[3]

In 1790 the first government demography taken afterward the adoption of the Constitution gave Laruens Commune 1,395 heads of families and a total population of 9,337 including Negro freedmen and slaves. Laurens District at that time had a larger population than any other upstate district except for Newberry (just barely).

The median income for a household in the county was $33,933, and the median income for a family unit was $39,739. Males had a median income of $30,402 versus $21,684 for females. The per capita income for the county was $fifteen,761. Most 11.60% of families and 14.30% of the population were below the poverty line, including nineteen.threescore% of those nether age 18 and xiii.50% of those age 65 or over.

As of May 2012, the county unemployment rate was 9.5%.^[11]

As of the 2010 U.s.a. Census, at that place were 66,537 people, 25,525 households, and 17,707 families residing in the county.^[12] The population density was 93.ii inhabitants per square mile (36.0 /km²). There were 30,709 housing units at an boilerplate density of 43.0 per square mile (16.6 /km²).^[13] The racial makeup of the canton was 70.4% white, 25.4% black or African American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% American Indian, 0.1% Pacific islander, two.3% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races.
